About MiLA
Family Learning Philosophy
Learning together creates deeper connections and lasting memories. When families engage in the educational journey as a team, children develop greater confidence, trust, and emotional security - the foundation for all meaningful learning.
Shared memories
MiLA brings generations together around the table or screen. These shared successes create joyful experiences for both young and old, building a treasure trove of positive emotions that make learning unforgettable.
Parent-child bonding
Makoto Shichida emphasises that a strong parent-child bond is the key to unlocking children's abilities. When parents are actively involved in the learning process and act as role models, children develop greater confidence and trust. This emotional security forms the foundation for meaningful learning.
Education of the heart
MiLA integrates Shichida's philosophy of "education of the heart," where learning begins with emotion rather than intellect. By engaging the learner's heart first, followed by intelligence and talents, we create a warm learning environment where emotional connection and personal meaning drive sustainable success.
Emotional security
Learning together creates connection and trust within the family. Parents become active participants and role models, while siblings support each other's progress. This collaborative approach provides children with the emotional security they need to explore and grow confidently.
Early childhood learning
Children from as young as one year old can absorb languages through hearing, seeing, and feeling—even before they can speak. MiLA presents content in an intuitive and loving way, allowing even the youngest learners to playfully immerse themselves in the world of languages through images, sounds, and simple words.
Shared learning experiences
MiLA's family-game character transforms education into a shared experience that brings generations together. Interactive opportunities allow children to learn alongside parents or grandparents, creating moments of connection and mutual achievement that strengthen family bonds while accelerating language learning.
What results can be expected?
MiLA users can look forward to fast, tangible learning progress – and without hours of cramming. The combination of insights from Vera F. Birkenbihl and Makoto Shichida with modern technology enables you to learn noticeably faster and retain what you’ve learned in a lasting way. Here’s an overview of the key results:
Fast language acquisition:
Thanks to intensive listening and intuitive learning, you build a solid basic vocabulary in a short time. Initial everyday conversations are possible after just a few weeks. (In fact, Birkenbihl-based courses promise that with daily use, you can achieve a basic vocabulary according to the European reference framework in 6 to 20 weeks – MiLA harnesses this effectiveness.) In short: You learn in months what would otherwise take years.

Photographic Memory Research
Professor Makoto Shichida's breakthrough research reveals how visual learning activates both brain hemispheres, creating stronger neural pathways for language acquisition.
Everyone has photographic memory that deteriorates without training

Right-Brain Training methodology
Visual imagination training by linking sounds and images in the mind
Benefits of Learning with MiLA

Faster Language Acquisition
Learn with MiLA’s proven method. Acquire the language naturally through listening and understanding, just like a child. Achieve conversational fluency in 6–20 weeks instead of after years of traditional learning.

Learn through real experience
Dive into authentic conversations from day one. No grammar drills - just real situations, practical phrases, and content that matches your interests and daily life for meaningful, emotional learning.

Long term memory stimulation
Activate both brain hemispheres through multisensory learning. Our passive listening technique lets your brain absorb language patterns naturally in the background, creating lasting neural connections for permanent retention.
Brain friendly learning
MiLA is brain-friendly learning in its purest form – intuitive, holistic, and stress-free.

Vera F. Birkenbihl & Makoto Shichida
Learning languages through a four-step, brain-friendly approach: decoding foreign texts word by word, listening while reading, passive absorption through repetition, and finally speaking – without memorization or grammar drills. The Makoto Shichida method, on the other hand, is a system for early childhood that focuses on holistic brain development through flashcards, memory games, and emotional connection, in order to naturally promote language acquisition and cognitive development.

Activates both hemispheres of the brain
The MiLA system activates both brain hemispheres by combining sensory-rich tasks, pattern recognition, imagery, and symbolic language. This stimulates analytical thinking (left brain) and creative, holistic processing (right brain), supporting interhemispheric communication and deeper, more balanced learning.

Right brain training
MiLA's right-brain training focuses on developing creativity, intuition, and memory through visual, musical, and emotional learning. It uses fast image recognition, storytelling, rhythmic repetition, and imagination-based exercises to strengthen the brain's ability to process information holistically and rapidly—key traits of right-brain function. This approach helps you retain knowledge effortlessly and fosters a deeper emotional connection to learning.

Multisensory learning
Each activity is designed to engage sight, sound and movement -such as combining spoken language with visual symbols and physical actions. This approach strengthens neural connections, supports various learning styles, and makes abstract concepts more tangible, helping you learn more deeply and naturally.

Learning with the heart not only with the brain
Emotional Connection First
Application in MiLA: The app prioritizes emotional engagement before intellectual learning - you need to feel connected to what you're learning before your mind can effectively process it
Ancient Wisdom Meets Modern Science
Instead of viewing intelligence as purely brain-based (modern Western view), this ancient perspective suggests that emotional/heart-centered learning is fundamental to true intelligence and understanding.
Learn in months instead of years
MiLA's brain-friendly approach delivers results up to 10x faster than traditional methods. Build practical vocabulary and conversational skills in weeks, not years.
The team behind MiLA
Behind MiLA is a passionate team of language enthusiasts and education innovators, led by Research Professor Dr. Thomas Kochanek.
Dr. Kochanek is not only an expert in learning methods, but also heads the private innovation school LzE Immersive Learning Space in Switzerland – a learning place that breaks new ground and promotes intuitive learning with all senses. The MiLA concept was originally tested and refined in this 'Learning by Immersion' school. This way, experiences from real classroom teaching flowed directly into the app development.
The MiLA team combines scientific expertise (including in cognitive science and didactics) with practical experience from everyday school life. This unique combination ensures that MiLA is pedagogically sound and user-friendly at the same time.
The app developers work closely with language teachers to ensure that each lesson optimally meets the learner's needs. In short: At MiLA, research meets practice – to the benefit of learners. So you can rest assured that behind the app are real people with vision and passion who are themselves enthusiastic about the MiLA approach.
